We’ve recently experienced charge air receiver to engine fastener failure accompanied by bracket weld failure.  We’ve repaired 2 out of 10 engines and currently have another 2 engines off line to make the same repair.

The engine heads must be removed to access the failed fasteners.

Wartsila is telling us that the issue is improper fastener torque during manufacture but we’re not sure that explains the problem completely.

Of the four engines – 3 have around 8000 hours and the 4th has 16,000 hours.

Would appreciate thoughts and comments from the group.

1 Year no replies, so I thought I’d add this, we had the same issues, but the Wartsilla TFA had a premade Fixture that clamped onto two head-studs, and then you would pass a 3/4′ drive extension between two Heim-joint Swivels, to stabilize the extension while torquing, and was able to retourqe all CAR to Block bolts. On a few we had to cram ourselves between the heads and use a Right Angle Drill with a left handed drill bit to extract the broken bolts.
